Hi and welcome to Dresses and Democracy!
I’m Talia, and I’m a 23-year-old content creator and southern belle currently living in the Washington, DC area and trying to navigate postgrad life. For my 9 to 5, I work on the digital side of politics.
I launched Dresses & Democracy in December of 2020. I’ve always loved writing, and I’ve been creating content online for a few years now. Iterations of this have come in a previous blog, a now-archived YouTube channel, and an Instagram account that’s gone through more name changes than I can count. Most of my inconsistency came from trying to balance content creation with college life (aka rigorous classes, a part-time job, internships and being on exec for a sorority), but once I graduated, I found that I had a lot more free time and thus got back into content creation. I hope to use this space as a creative outlet to share whatever is on my mind. Right now, that’s a combination of posts about fashion, lifestyle, beauty and politics.
I’d describe my style as classic and girly but with trendy elements mixed in as well. Some of my wardrobe essentials include flowy dresses, fun heels, statement earrings, headbands, and lots of pink. I’ll splurge on timeless, high-quality pieces that I’ll have for a long time, but I also love to hunt for a good sale or discount find. In my closet, you’re likely to find clothes ranging from Anthropologie to Lilly Pulitzer to Lululemon.
I love sweet tea, bright and happy colors, U.S. politics, margaritas, things that sparkle, cute shoes, my alma mater UNC, and cheesy romance novels.
I also love connecting with people! I’m super active on Instagram, so send me a DM if you ever want to chat. For business inquiries, please email me at taliasoniaw@gmail.com.
Behind the Name
My blog’s name is a product of me trying to brainstorm something representative of who I am. I love the quirky, alliterative blog names that are two nouns: “blank” and “blank.” I wanted one of those, but had to put my own spin on things.
I’ve always been fascinated by politics. I have a degree in political science, and I’m pretty much constantly following up on everything going on in Washington. I’m a candid person when it comes to political discussions, and I don’t think that political views should be this secretive thing. Thus, I felt that a blog title related to politics was fitting. I initially thought of using “politics” as one of the words in the title, but it was difficult thinking of another “p” word to go with it. After a lot more thought, I finally settled on Dresses & Democracy. As soon as I came up with it, the name felt perfect. I’ve been a girly-girl for as long as I can remember, and I frequently reach for the dresses in my closet because let’s face it: they’re way easier to make an outfit out of compared to picking out two matching pieces. And like I said, I’m a politics geek and therefore a huge fan of democracy too. Dresses & Democracy just felt like me, so I hope you enjoy reading what I have to say here!
